When you hear the word 'self-care', what do you think of?

Taking a bubble bath? Having a massage? A cup of tea? Lighting a candle?

But probably not therapy!!! Am I right??

A bubble bath as self care

I was having a conversation with a friend of mine very recently, and he asked me "why do people come to therapy?", and "how do they know they need therapy?" AND "why do people not talk to their friends instead?".

All really good questions, and I replied that therapy is a form of self-care.

While the massage or the bubble bath are lovely and sometimes much needed, there’s a deeper kind of self-care that often gets overlooked. That’s what therapy offers.

If you’re a professional navigating the effects of stress, burnout or any other life challenge, therapy isn’t just helpful, it can be life-changing.

Redefining Self-Care

We live in a world where counselling has always been associated with mental illness, mental problems, and those words paint an incredibly negative light on what therapy can provide. It's only for people that are ill!  We've also grown up in a society where we are taught to be strong, pull our big girl pants up and get on with it. When we are encouraged to stay small and quiet, therapy can feel like a selfish act.

Why?

Because looking after ourselves with therapy says to others and ourselves that:

  • I matter!!

  • It says my story deserves to be heard.

  • And it says - I am worthy of care.

Self-care isn’t just about soothing; it's about doing the deeper emotional work that allows you to feel more grounded, more resilient, and more connected to yourself.

Why Therapy Is Especially Powerful for Professionals

Whether you are a business owner, a business leader or a professional where the expectations on you are high - you'll know that you are often expected to have it all sorted, to be the one with all the answers and hold it all together.

But who holds space for YOU?

In therapy, you are allowed to be fully seen.

A man with stress and burnout

Your fears. Your grief. Your dreams. Your messy middle.

Therapy helps you:

  • Understand your emotional patterns

  • Rebuild self-trust

  • Set boundaries without guilt

  • Let go of shame and perfectionism

  • Finally feel enough, just as you are

Seeking Help Is Brave, Not Weak

There’s still a lingering stigma that says needing therapy means you’re broken. But here’s the truth:

Asking for support is a deeply courageous act.

Especially if you’ve spent years being “the strong one” for everyone else. Especially if you were never taught how to ask for help. Choosing therapy is a powerful step toward becoming the most whole, authentic version of yourself.

What to Expect When You Start Therapy

You don’t need to have all the answers when you walk through the door (or open the online link).

You don’t need to explain everything perfectly. You just need to show up.

A good therapist will meet you where you are. They’ll help you go at your own pace. And they’ll hold space for all the parts of you.

You Deserve This

You deserve care. Not just when you’re burnt out or in crisis, but every day.You deserve a space where you don’t have to mask or perform. You deserve healing, support, and space to grow.

Therapy is not about fixing yourself. It’s about coming home to yourself.

And that, more than anything, is what true self-care looks like.
